At the City of Bellingham, the Assistant Director of Public Works - Transportation is responsible for planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling the Transportation Division of the Public Works Department. Oversees daily operations and assists the Director in developing and carrying out strategic plans, programs, budgets, policies, procedures, and initiatives of the division. Works collaboratively with other divisions, departments, and outside groups to accomplish the work, mission, goals, and vision of the Public Works Department and City. Ensures compliance with department and city policies and procedures, collective bargaining agreements, and legal requirements. Promotes the Public Service competencies of service orientation, results orientation, and teamwork and cooperation. Ensures projects, tasks, and responsibilities are accomplished in an effective and cost-efficient manner. Develops relationships with staff, other departments, and individuals outside City government that encourage participation, teamwork, effective relationships, and use of resources. Represents the department in public involvement initiatives and engages with elected officials, other policymakers, and citizens while maintaining a professional approach and demeanor in all activities.

The current full salary range for this position is $11,087/month - $13,476/month. Placement within the range is based on qualifications and professional experience in accordance with City policy. Employees receive step increases annually in accordance with the E-Team Handbook and City policy.

City of Bellingham employees receive medical, dental, and vision insurance as well as life insurance and long-term disability. All eligible City employees are enrolled in a Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (www.drs.wa.gov) pension plan. Additionally, employees may elect to enroll in supplemental retirement plans; 457 deferred compensation savings plan, and 401(a) retirement savings plan.

Employees will receive 12 paid holidays in addition to one paid floating holiday each year. Upon hire, employees are provided a sick leave bank of 40 hours in addition to accruing 8 hours of sick leave per month in accordance with the handbook and Washington State Law. At the time of hire, employees will accrue 13.33 hours of vacation per month. Vacation accruals increase based on years of service.
